What should you know before moving to Leipzig

Over the past few years, Leipzig has become known as “Hypezig”, making moving to the city very popular, especially among young people who are attracted by the busy nightlife and independent local music scene.

Moving to Leipzig

Leipzig is an attractive place to live for professionals, as the city is home to a thriving biotech industry and world-leading medical research. Top-class culture is another reason why moving to Leipzig is a good idea for many people. The city ranks among the top three European cities in terms of living standards.

Climate in Leipzig

According to the Köppen climate classification, Leipzig has an oceanic climate, meaning warm but not hot summers and rather mild and cool winters.

Summer temperatures usually hover around 25°C, although on the hottest days in July and August they can exceed 35°C. Leipzig’s winters are fairly wet, but temperatures tend to stay above freezing.

At the height of summer, the city enjoys around 7.4 hours of sunshine a day, while in December this figure drops to just 1.7 hours a day.

Visas to Germany

Germany is a member of the European Union and therefore any citizen of another EU country has the right to live and work in the country. Residents of other countries, unless they are visa-exempt countries, must have a visa to live in Leipzig.

Leipzig follows the visa policy of the Schengen area, which includes all 22 member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The visa policy of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania is also similar.

Citizens of other countries should apply for a visa for travel to Leipzig in their own country. Applications should be submitted to the German representative office responsible for the person’s place of residence. Citizens of the USA, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea and New Zealand may enter Germany without a visa and then apply for a residence permit.
