Dresden is one of the most interesting cities in Germany to live, work and relax in. Everything is at your fingertips there. Here are 10 reasons why Dresden is worth living and makes you happy there.

Dresden attracts with its culture

Dresden is known worldwide as a city of art and culture. In a 2012 list of cities of culture, Dresden ranks second, ahead of Munich, Berlin and Hamburg. No wonder, since Dresden is home to 55 galleries, 44 museums and 34 theatres and stages.

The most important monuments and memorials such as the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House, the Zwinger in Dresden and the Albertinum are world famous. A unique view can also be enjoyed during a tram ride over one of the bridges near the city centre. The view of the city silhouette with the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House, the palace and court church and the lemon press may not be impressive, but it has a centuries-old tradition.

Baroque Old Town

When you hear “Dresden”, you immediately think of Baroque architecture. Many old buildings adorn the old town. They are reminders of the reign of Augustus the Strong. The Zwinger has a baroque design. Apart from this style, there are other architectural styles such as Art Nouveau. The Palace of Culture, the Crystal Palace or the synagogue show the modern side of Dresden. The city is very diverse in terms of styles, but most people nevertheless associate it as a typically Baroque city.

Infrastructure and traffic

Dresden is perfectly connected by transport in all areas. S-Bahns, trams, buses, mountain railways and ferries provide seamless passenger transport. In addition, Dresden has an airport and excellent cycle paths to offer, so it is the perfect place to move to.

The state capital is well connected and has one of the largest tram networks in Germany. Every day, 12 tram lines and 29 bus lines operate in the dense urban network, connecting different parts of the city with each other. Work is ongoing to expand and modernise the tracks, trams and buses. Of the 147 buses, 10% are already environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles.

Research and education in Dresden

Dresden is the city with the highest density of scientific research in Germany. With 45 research institutions, Dresden ranks 5th behind Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne.

Dresden attaches great importance to education. There are 136 schools in Dresden.  Half of all students obtain a university entrance qualification, which puts the applied education system in a top position.

Dresden is a city for the whole family

Dresden is a city where people are eager to see their children grow up. The city is the birth capital of Germany with 113 births per 10,000 inhabitants. Dresden is focusing on the expansion of day-care facilities and schools in order to cope with the high birth rate.
